Up-cycle a Coat into a Purse:

Have a favorite coat or jacket that no longer fits? Let Crystalyn show you how you can deconstruct any jacket into a useful purse! You provide the jacket and a sewing machine, and we’ll supply the rest! Please come prepared with a washed coat (or vintage genuine leather for the over-achievers!). Crystalyn can help you find the perfect material for your purse if you don’t have something in mind.

- Make sure you have ready:
- vintage leather, denim or wool coat
- 1 yard of ultrasuede, quilting cotton or lining-weight material to line your bag
- sewing machine & heavy-duty thread
- fabric scissors or leather shears (if using leather, your wrists will thank you later),
- chalk (for fabric) or awl (for leather) to mark holes & alignment points,
- rotary handle, blades, self-healing mat & clear ruler
- iron & ironing board or heat press
- heat-resistant glass-head pins
- 6” of duct tape to secure magnetic snap
For leather you will also need:
- leather sewing machine needles,
- teflon presser foot (be sure to purchase the correct shank for your machine)
optional: fray check (or use your serger sewing machine)
- Teflon sheet to protect iron/heat press from interfacing glue
Homework. Choose a vintage coat or leather jacket to deconstruct. If choosing leather, check the underside to ensure it is genuine leather, which will look like suede on the underside. Intermediate. Requires sewing machine.

Learn how to make a flower pin brooch using leather, fabric, and vintage buttons to create a sentimental keepsake. We’ll walk you through each step of the process, discuss types of fabrics that work best, demonstrate cutting and layering techniques to create a visually-striking composition. We’ll also share tips on how you can up-cycle old clothes or leather garments. We will offer a kit which provides materials and hardware to make a set of flower pins; all you need are scissors and a glue gun

- fabric scissors or leather shears (if using leather, your wrists will thank you later),
- awl to poke center holes & alignment points,
- multi-temp hot glue gun & sticks,
- 10-12 pieces fabric, leather, or wool felt scrap 3”-5” diameter,
Optional:
- feathers, beads or vintage buttons to embellish
- fray check to seal edges of raw fabric
